Winter colours

I know, we're still enjoying summer and we want it to never ever end, but don't you too get excited when looking at these pretty winter/fall colours?! Looking forward to wearing all this!

From top to bottom: Dark green woolen/suede tube skirt (studioRUIG) | purple dress (vintage) (actually it's more for summer than winter but its colour just fits nicely with the rest ;-) ) | patterned tube skirt (vintage) | orange woolen trousers (Monique van Heist) | navy woolen sweater with zipper detail on one shoulder (Youasme Measyou)

Summer on Vuurtoreneiland

Barely the size of two football fields, Vuurtoreneiland in the Markermeer, close to Amsterdam, is a quiet little island that can only be reached by boat. On it are a house, a lighthouse (Amsterdam's only one, built in 1893, before the island was hit away from the mainland during a storm), a small fortress and a handful of sheep. The island was used in the past to defend our capital. Right now there are plans to exploit it and make it available to the public (hopefully in harmony with the character of the island). Until these plans are final, a temporary summer restaurant has been opened on it from July until September, on limited evenings and afternoons.

We were lucky to obtain tickets, which exactly describes how we felt when we entered the island earlier this week: lucky!! The boat trip itself was already a gift (Amsterdam and its surroundings are always nice places for boat trips), but on the island we were walking around like a bunch of happy kids that had never been out of the city. Such a peaceful place, with water everywhere (of course Eva, it's an island - have you never been out of town?!!?) and then there was that light - just beautiful. The restaurant was located in a temporary greenhouse, which contributed to the one-with-nature experience. The food was great (except for the main dish which could have been better, but hey who needs perfection ;-) ) and so was our company (new parents Fleur and Fabian!). So I guess it was just one of those evenings you won't forget. Lucky us.

Slowing approaching the island..

Climbing our way up to the lighthouse!

Mmmm...

Such prettiness!

Getting darker..

Yesterday we had diner at Vuurtoreneiland ('Lighthouse Island'), a 45 minute boat trip from Amsterdam. It was fantastic. I will tell/show you more about it later!

GO SEE: CODA Paper Art 2013

As a reminder on my kitchen cupboard: this announcement of the CODA Paper Art exhibition currently held in the CODA Museum in Apeldoorn, the Netherlands. Exhibited are visual art and jewellery made of and on paper by artists from both the Netherlands and abroad. Perhaps worth a visit!

It's that time of the month...

... when new magazines come in and old ones go out.

And yep, I admit, I'm that kind of nerd who - instead of throwing old magazines away or storing them nicely in order on shelves - cuts them and sticks them into notebooks. Oh, me and my notebooks... I have sooo many of them!! For collecting images or words on fashion, interior design, travel, psychology - you name it and I have it, collected in some notebook. Actually this blog is really nothing more than an online version of these things..

But about fashion.. (now that we are looking at images of it anyway ;-) ) I LOVE fashion because I can't help but fall for everything aesthetic (so including pretty things to wear) and because it enables to create (your own style in particular). It's a way of self-expression blablabla - I know, cliche, but TRUE! At the same time there is that buy-and-throw-away/replace mentality that often seems to go together with fashion too. Collections come and go so fast that I wonder how all those fashion designers can ever keep up! And, of course, how important is a piece of cloth compared to so many other, much more essential things in life?!

Anyhow, for me fashion is about having an eye for quality, detail, materials, silhouettes. Right now I'm very much into high waisted trousers/jeans and - perfect for work - tube skirts, preferably combined with a tucked-in (very important!) T-shirt, blouse or sweater. The oversized coat is still a favorite (winter and summer) and so are (wide) white blouses and T-shirts (for a masculine touch). To make sure my wardrobe lasts longer than a season or two, I try to buy only stuff that is of good quality, is relatively timeless (which does not apply always and does not mean I only go for basic as you've seen before) and goes well with the clothes I already have. That does not prevent me from throwing a hardly-worn dress or shirt on Ebay occasionally, but at least I'm not throwing things away then..

Well, let's see what those new magazines have to offer inspiration wise... Enjoy your September issues!

I'm obsessed..

... with Valeria's dress. So simple, so elegant and then there is... that bow! I just love it. It's from Valentino by the way. Oh and these photos are taken in restaurant STORK, located in a former Stork factory at the northern banks of the river IJ in Amsterdam. Romantic meets industrial!

In love | Marnix & Valeria

Love was filling the air last week when our friends Marnix & Valeria said I do in front of a small group of family and close friends. Everyone could see that true love is going on between these people, who seem to be dedicated to making each other happy and are really completing each other. Dear Marnix & Valeria, I think you're such a sweet couple. Thank you for the wonderful day and wishing you a long and happy life together!!
